Imagine that you are sitting out on the bleachers in the early hours of the morning waiting for the Junkanoo Parade to begin. The crowd sits excitedly with anticipation as they try to keep warm from the chilly breeze from the sea. The crowd then jumps up with excitement as they hear the pulsating beat of the goat skin drums. Heads start to bob and hands begin to wave as the crowd becomes engulfed in the sounds of the whistles and percussion, and they are dazzled by the extraordinary craft-work. The participants in the parade are filled with energy and allow themselves to be controlled by the music. They dance around proud, showing off their costumes which display a cornucopia of color.
What is this parade complete with colorful costumes, goatskin drums, jangling cowbells and raucous shak-shaks? Well it is Junkanoo!
